Classical Tradition

This series presents the translation into English of the German edition, published in 2002. The work offers wide-ranging coverage of subjects that are derived from, related to, or based on the classical tradition, for example, neo-classicism, or the reception and historiography of classical art, architecture, and thought in the West. A sampling of topics in the present volume includes Paestum's influences on later architecture; the building and organization of the Louvre Museum in Paris, its collections of classical and near eastern art; political theory; Pompeii; possession; psychoanalysis; and religion and literature. Entries are included for modern countries, including Poland and Portugal, with lengthy sections in each on their reception history, history of scholarship, and collections of antiquities. The volumes assume no knowledge of classical languages and offer English translation of Greek and Roman terms. The bibliographies that accompany each entry are extensive.
