Street Traders — A Bridge Between Trade Unions and Social Movements in Contemporary South Africa

Celik (sociology, U. of Freiburg, Germany) examines the emergence and development of new democratic street traders' organizations in Durban, South Africa; their relations with the largest union federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions and its affiliates; their engagement with the shack-dwellers movement, Abahlli baseMjondolo; and the alliance of all these three with the other constituencies of the marginalized people in the World Class Cities For All campaign leading up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He finds that social and political activism spreads from group to group and back, perhaps leading soon to a comprehensive program of reform. He has not indexed his work.
