Sweitzer, who coaches adults and young people with ADHD and works for a drug and alcohol addiction treatment center, proposes that boredom and escape from boredom are key elements of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and offers strategies for preventing boredom. She explains how it is related to inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, and claims that boredom is more intense in those with ADHD. She describes boredom and ADHD in history; how to recognize elements of interest in the spontaneous expressions, top 10 joys, and childhood interests of clients, children, or students; how to use the elements of interest as tools for escaping boredom; how to deal with lack of freedom; how to understand aspects like attention, focus, hyperfocus, and flow; and the role of boredom in addiction, recovery, and relapse.
