Civil Society on the Move ─ Transition and Transfer in Germany and South Korea

The nine essays in this volume are based on contributions presented at three workshops in Berlin: “Challenges for Korean Civil Society after Democratic Transformation--Experiences of Post-Socialist Countries in Eastern Europe and Reunified Germany,” held in May 2009; “Location and Function of Civil Society within Democratic Systems,” held in June 2010; and “Actors of Civil Society: Student Movement and Civil Society,” held in 2011. They analyze the concept of civil society organization in Germany, Eastern Europe, and South Korea, and the role of civil society, its status, and its political characteristics in recently-democratized political systems. Scholars from these countries consider the challenges, functions, and influence of civil society, discussing the development of civil society in Western and Eastern Europe and in the Arab cultural region from a political theory perspective, civil society after democratization in South Korea, and student movements; the ideological fragmentation process of Korean civil society after democratization, the function of civil society in Eastern European countries that experienced a crisis of representative democracy after regime change, and the efforts of Korean civil society organizations to create think tanks after democratization; and the influence of student movements in Korea and Germany. Hannes B. Mosler is Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of East Asian Studies at Freie Universitat Berlin. His major research interests are political parties, political systems, constitutional law, and policy decision processes in Korea.
