This volume focuses on the primary developments in the British empire's settlement colonies in the years leading up to the 20th century, and examines the changing relationship between British authority and colonial autonomy. In illustrating the larger theme of self-government, Madden provides sections on the British viewpoint of imperialism and self-government, the development of self-government in specific colonies, the extension of self-government beyond internal affairs, and the eventual federal governments and contiguous groupings of colonies.

作者簡介

FREDERICK MADDEN is Emeritus Reader in Commonwealth Government, Nuffield College, Oxford University. He was previously Beit Lecturer in Colonial History and is the author or coeditor ofOxford and the Idea of Commonwealth, Australia and Britain

Imperial Constitutional Documents, 1765-1965, A Supplement and British Colonial Developments, 1774-1834.

DAVID FIELDHOUSE is Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History, the senior imperial chair at Cambridge University, and Fellow of Jesus College. He is the former Beit Lecturer, successor to Frederick Madden, and is the author ofThe Colonial Empires, Economics and Empire, 1830-1914 and Unilever Overseas, which won the annual award of the Business Archives Council in 1980.
