Groundwater Assessment, Modeling, and Management

The book starts with the introduction of recapping groundwater basics and an overview of the development of electrical resistivity methods. The book essentially deals with the resistivity tomography for the identification of potential boreholes in hard rock regions, resource evaluation through remote sensing along with GIS, aquifer parameterization through pumping tests, augmentation of groundwater recharge through aquifer storage and recovery and managing recharged aquifer. The effective water management practices followed in agriculture sector for optimal cropping patterns has been discussed along with flow and mass transport models to assess and manage groundwater resources.

Dr. M. Thangarajan, formerly Scientist-G & Head groundwater modeling group at National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, India, obtained his Bachelors and Masters in Physics at Madras University and PhD in Applied Geophysics from Indian school of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad. He has carried out extensive research work in the assessment and management of groundwater resources through electric analog and mathematical modeling. He had visited Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, USA and Botswana. His research work and technical reports have been utilized for practical use in the assessment of groundwater resources, evolving optimal pumping schemes and quantification of pollutant migration in various projects in India and abroad. He has published over 140 research papers in National, International Journals and seminar proceeding volumes. He is the co-editor of five conferences proceeding volumes and authored two books on Groundwater modeling. He has edited a book on "Groundwater" which was published jointly by Springer Ltd., and Capital Book Publishing Company, New Delhi. He has founded the Association of Global Groundwater Scientists (AGGS), Coimbatore and motivated in organizing six International Groundwater Conferences under the banner of IGWC. He is the receiptant of Groundwater Scientist with Humanitarian Vision Award from Dindigul Chamber of Commerce for his dedicated effort to bring user community, decision makers and Scientists from India and abroad to a common platform in a rural town and discussed various issues regarding the identification of potential bore holes and its management aspect.

Professor V. P. Singh is Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Texas A & M University, USA. He received his B.S., M.S., Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in Engineering. He is a registered professional Engineer, professional Hydrologist, and an Honorary diplomate in water resources engineering and American Academy of Water resources Engineers. He has published more than 760 journal articles; 23 textbooks; 55 edited reference books, including the massive Encyclopedia of Snow, Ice and Glaciers; 80 book chapters; 303 conference papers; and 70 technical reports in the areas of hydrology, groundwater, hydraulics, irrigation engineering, environmental engineering and water resources. For his scientific contributions to the development and management of water resources, he has received more than 65 national and international awards and numerous honors, including the Arid Lands Hydraulic Engineering Award, Ven Te Chow Award, Richard R. Torrens Award, Norman Medal, and EWRI Lifetime Achievement Award, all given by American Society of Civil Engineers, 2010; Ray K. Linsley Award and Founder’s Award, given by American Institute of Hydrology, 2006. He has received three honorary doctorates. He is a fellow of ASCE, EWRI, AWRA, IWRS, ISAE, IASWC and IE and holds membership in 16 additional professional associations. He is a fellow/member of 10 international science/engineering academies. He has served as President and Senior Vice President of the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH).
