Literacy Engagement Through Peritextual Analysis

This volume brings together 12 chapters that explore ways to help students understand the purpose and function of peritext and use it to support critical thinking and the evaluation of information. Librarians and English education and other specialists from the US use various texts and grade levels to explore the function of peritext in the further understanding of text, addressing the Peritextual Literacy Framework; the use of young adult nonfiction to analyze peritext; using peritextual analysis to strengthen students' visual literacy skills through graphic novel covers, book cover speed dating, young adult fiction covers, and canonical book covers; using peritextual analysis to strengthen critical thinking, through authors’ notes and dust jackets; and how the functions of peritext and the Peritextual Literacy Framework exist within nonprint texts, including online news articles, Disney films, and documentary films.
