The European project was funded on the principle of Solidarity. In this fascinating Continent, our grandparents were able to "forgive" the very same people that 10 years earlier put their families in death camps. We, contemporary Europeans, are not able to "forgive" people that poorly managed their public accounts. Why? And could this change with the current crisis? -The year is 1953. German officials are visiting London. It's winter. Along with colleagues from Britain, France and the US they are about to make history. A treaty is being signed. It will cancel all post-WWII debt for Germany, paving the way for a bright future of economic, social and cultural development in Europe. The treaty has a boring name: "London debt agreement". Yet, it is anything but. It will effectively allow Germany to become one of the most advanced, democratic and developed nations on Earth.Fast forward 67 years. European nations have experienced more than half a century of peace, growth and prosperity. They are now on the verge of one the largest economic, humanitarian and societal crisis they had to face in the last century. A new virus that has taken everyone by surprise, overloaded hospitals and killed thousands. Yet, instead of preparing a common answer, European leaders are busy dog-fighting over who is going to pay the bill. Why? And, most importantly, what should we do instead?This book intends to be a Manifesto on what Europe needs to be, even before what needs to do, if intends to survive the century.
