Townsend (history, Rutgers University) has edited and translated two Nahuatl chronicles from the seventeenth century. These were written in Nahuatl, using Latin script, by natives who were Christianized. At least one was a priest. However, the native worldview was only lightly overlaid by Spanish culture and these are precious remnants of life during the first years after the conquest. The chronicles are reproduced in facing page text. Townsend precedes the text with an introduction explaining the history of the Tlaxcala-Puebla valley. She notes the particular experience of the Nahuas in that they allied with the Spanish to defeat their long time enemies, the Mexica. This gave them certain privileges. She also discusses the nature of the society in the valley along with the relation of these to other annuals (chronicles) that have survived. James Lockhart adds an essay on the language of the texts, describing the stages of assimilation by the Nahuas of Spanish terms and grammar. This book will be of great interest to Mesoamerican scholars. The clear writing style also makes it accessible to the many non-specialists interested in the diverse societies of pre-conquest Mexico. Camilla Townsend is Professor of History at Rutgers University. She is the author of Malintzin's Choices: An Indian Woman in the Conquest of Mexico (2006) and Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma (2004).
