Bibliographic Control of Music, 1897-2000

With students of music librarianship in mind, Smiraglia (library and information science, Long Island U.) and J. Bradford Young (music technical services librarian, U. of Pennsylvania) compile, from print and online sources, a bibliography of 880 periodicals and monographs on music cataloging in an effort to disseminate procedures. Publications, in chronological order from the late nineteenth through twentieth centuries, are in all languages and include some unpublished research papers. General library administration is not covered. The bibliography is preceded by an essay on the history of bibliographic control of music from 1897 to 2000. J. Bradford Young is the music technical services librarian for the Otto E. Albrecht Music Library at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of A Thematic Catalog of the Works of Robert Valentine (Scarecrow, 1994).
