Handbook of Engaged Scholarship:Contemporary Landscapes, Future Directions: Institutional Change

This is the first of two volumes comprising the Handbook which begins the publisher's new series, "Transformations in Higher Education; the Scholarship of Engagement." The initiative is a response to the Kellogg Foundation task force which has urged academic institutions to involve students in work that connects them to the wider community and to form community partnerships that are deep and long lasting and productive for all concerned . Contributors report on the massive response to the call for higher education to engage with the larger community and help address problems beyond the ivied walls. Participants in programs to that end describe the emerging movement, the higher education landscape, engaged faculty and emerging scholars, and student learning in the engaged academy. Among their topics are a history of the scholarship of the engagement movement, land-grant and research universities, integrating outreach and engagement into faculty work, and changing pedagogies. The three editors are affiliated as follows: Hiram E. Fitzgerald (psychology, and university outreach and engagement, Michigan State U.), Cathy Burack (higher education, social policy, Brandeis U.), and Sarena D.
