The author of this work sees a connection between the desire for war and the desire to restore male dominance; he argues that one of the reasons young men go to war is to return home as heroic warriors and desirable potential mates. He draws on historical and literary sources, statistical data, and popular culture to show that advance's in women's rights and economic parity have made men more willing to go to war to regain their masculinity, from the Civil War through Vietnam and the Middle East wars. The author claims that each of these conflicts was directly preceded by substantial progress for women, and that each of these wars has resulted in setbacks for women in the victorious nations, yet greater progress for women on the losing side. 作者簡介
John V. H. Dippel (Piermont, NY), an independent historian, is the author of Race to the Frontier, Bound Upon a Wheel of Fire, and Two Against Hitler. His articles on politics and social affairs have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, New Republic, Christian Science Monitor, and many other publications.
