Beato (1832-1909) is recognized as one of the 19th-century pioneers of photography--especially wartime photography--in the Middle East and Asia. His images opened the eyes of his contemporaries, and their stunning power has not diminished with the years. Accompanying the photo reproductions are an extensive essay on Beato's early life and photographic technique by Anne Lacoste (assistant curator of photographs, J. Paul Getty Museum) and commentary from Fred Ritchin (photography, New York University's Tisch School of the Arts) that specifically addresses Beato's war photography. Anne Lacoste, assistant curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, is coauthor of Irving Penn: Small Trades (Getty Publications, 2009). Fred Ritchin, former photograph editor of the New York Times Magazine, is professor of photography and imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and author of After Photography and In Our Own Image: The Coming Revolution in Photography.
