The Rural Housing Question: Community and Planning in Britain's Countrysides

This volume documents the current housing crisis in rural Britain concerning availability and cost, particularly in terms of the affordability of housing for those who work in the country side and their families. Satsangi (housing studies, U. of Stirling, UK), Gallent (housing and planning, U. College London, UK) and Bevan (Centre for Housing Policy, U. of York, UK) describe the problems facing both traditional workers and international migrants following the expansion of the European Union in 2004, while also addressing other factors of demand stemming from rural-to-urban commuters, retirement migrants, and second home buyers. They then turn to examination of the supply-side, covering house-building for sale, the private and social renting sectors, the planning frameworks, and the policy interventions that are intended to address unmet needs.
