The Chronology of American Popular Music, 1900-2000 is an annotated chronology dealing with all types of twentieth-century American popular music. From the age of cylinder recordings to MP3s, the work documents the performers, producers, record company moguls, critics, disc jockeys, and managers who shaped America's popular music. Inclusive in definition, the chronology documents everything from Tin Pan Alley song to country, R&B to rock 'n' roll, mainstream pop, and popular jazz.
Each entry is annotated, with a description of the event and its meaning in the larger context of the history of popular music. This reference work provides a survey of popular music history which encompasses all notable genres, artists, and related socio-cultural trends. The index provides well-organized access to the information covering: milestone accomplishments, whether pertaining to an individual career or the music industry as a whole; death dates, which serve as the summation of a career; events or creations that prove influential or widely imitated; significant chart or sales activity, especially achieving the number one ranking on a particular chart; awards or special recognition for achievements; and oddities that serve to illustrate or symbolize a prevailing attitude or movement.
