Mabillon could have merely refuted de Rance's assertions that scholarship was an unsuitable job for monks, but instead he showed how valuable that work was not only to the apologetics of the Church but also to its significance as the primary information system of the day. Of special interest is Mabillon's chapter on problems and contradictions in the writings of the Church Fathers, a rational and objective essay which is still of value to scholars.
