Science for Girls: Successful Classroom Strategies

This volume considers the ways in which girls learn, with an emphasis on science in particular. Goetz describes how the brain works, gender differences, differences in learning styles, and classroom strategies for teaching science to girls. She also discusses science education in today's schools, strategies for teaching as recommended by national organizations, and lesson plan styles that connect to girls' learning styles. Strategies and activities included will also be engaging to boys. Appendices contain articles on single-sex schooling, tips for increasing participation in science, math, and computers, and a summary of a conference: "Why the Difference?" Teachers Conference on Best Practices to Engage Girls and Students of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, held in June of 2006 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Susan Gibbs Goetz has been an elementary, middle, and high school science teacher; an elementary principal; and is currently associate professor at The College of St. Catherine, an all-women's college. She has spent much of her career researching the learning styles of females, particularly as it relates to science education.
