Ladies in the Laboratory III ─ South African, Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian Women in Science: Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries A Survey of their Contributions

In this sequel to surveys of 19th century women scientists from the US and Britain (1998) and western Europe (2004), a retired research chemist examines the science-related contributions of 26 women in four countries (shown in maps) that were then part of the British Empire. These women were selected on the basis of having published papers deemed sufficiently important to be indexed in the London Royal Society's Catalogue, at a time when opportunities for women in these countries were even more restricted than in the US and Europe. Most treated topics in the biological sciences; botany and astronomy are also represented. The volume is organized by country, women's status (amateur/ university-trained), and field. Mary R.S. Creese is a former research chemist and has written numerous publications about the history of women scientists. She is the author of Ladies in the Laboratory: American and British Women in Science, 1800-1900 (Scarecrow, 1998) and Ladies in the Laboratory II: West European Women in Science, 1800-1900 (Scarecrow, 2003).
