Old World, New World: America and Europe in the Age of Jefferson

Sadosky (history, Iowa State University) and his colleagues present papers from the 2005 Salzburg Seminar held in Austria. The subtitle for the seminar was "the age of Jefferson" and his experiences in Europe as well as his conflicted attitudes toward the Old World form the basis of some of the essays. Others, however, treat his compatriot, John Adams and his sojourn in England and France as well as the American visit of British envoy, William Eden. The attitude of Londoners to American Colonial visitors is given a not very flattering revision. The difference between the self-definition of male and female exiles is examined as well as the life of Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, America's first celebrity in the tabloid sense.
