Newbury (African studies, Smith College) presents a collection of his essays, written for various journals, on pre-colonial Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Congo. It is symbolic that the first map of many in the book has no borderlines, for Newbury erases the colonial boundaries and colonial preconceptions that have plagued Africa for so many centuries. His first two chapters cover the western historiography that attempted to see African history and culture as often faulty forms of European institutions. He then reviews the work of more recent, postcolonial scholars The remainder of the book is a restructuring of the old concepts of state and status to explain the ways in which territory, kingship, religion and family combined to form societies that were different from but as complex as those in Europe. David Newbury is the Gwendolen Carter Professor of African Studies at Smith College. His books include and Clans: A Social History of the Lake Kivu Rift Valley, African Historiographies: What History for Which Africa?, and Paths to the Past: Essays in Honor of Jan Vansina.
