Roxworthy (theater and dance, U. of California, San Diego) examines the American internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II in terms of spectacle and drama, arguing that government and media coverage of the internment made the public passive spectators. She concentrates on the methods used to distance most of America from the Japanese citizens, from editorials to photographs to staged visitations of the camps showing happy internees. Roxworthy also looks at performances that the internees organized and performed in the camps. While many activities such as baton twirling and big band music underline the fact that many of those interned were native born, traditional Japanese art and drama were also created, despite the disapproval of those running the camps. For those who still prefer to believe that the camps were necessary and humane and that Japanese-Americans bear no resentment, Roxworthy shows the trauma and anger that lie behind the facade.
