In a volume which began life as a doctoral dissertation at University College Cork, Kennedy (history, Francis Marion U., Florence, South Carolina) presents a study of public opinion on Irish nationalists during the period prior to the Easter Rising of 1916. From his analysis of the Irish Party (headed by pro-Parnell John Redmond) during this period of turbulent Anglo-Irish relations, he challenges the perception that positions remained static and concludes that the executions of the separatist leaders were a catalyst for a shift already in progress rather than the trigger for a dramatic change in opinion.
