The exchanges collected here, on the relationship between science, religion, and history, are selected from a series of forums appearing in the Historical Society's publication, Historically Speaking, from 2005 to 2008. Each forum begins with an essay by a scholar of international reputation, followed by responses from other scholars, and a concluding rejoinder by the lead essayist. Part I explores the historical relationship of science and religion in general. Part II focuses on the case for historical complexity. Part III looks at the concept of a Scientific Revolution and its conflict with recent historiography, and Part IV debates the question of whether there is progress in history. The book is intended as a supplemental reader for students of scientific and religious history. Yerxa is co-director of the Historical Society and senior editor of its bulletin, Historically Speaking. He is also emeritus professor of history at Eastern Nazarene College.
