Alan Bean ─ Painting Apollo : First Artist on Another World

This stunning collection of photographic portraits traces 150 years of U.S. history through the lives of well-known abolitionists, artists, scientists, writers, statesmen, entertainers, and sports figures. Drawing on the photography collection of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, Deborah Willis celebrates the ways in which these images furthered recognition and equality in America, and even today challenge us all to uphold America's highest ideals and promises.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) was established by an act of Congress in 2003. The new museum will be erected on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., at Constitution Avenue and Fourteenth Street, NW. Currently, during the pre-building phase, the museum is presenting exhibitions, producing publications, hosting public events, and offering an array of interactive programs and educational resources at the Museum on the Web at http://www.nmaahc.si.edu.

Alan Bean is an American legend. Famous as the lunar module pilot on Apollo 12 and the fourth man to set foot on the moon, Bean also served as Commander of the 59-day Skylab 3 Space Station mission. Alan Bean and his story have featured on numerous television talk shows, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and many more. He lives in Houston, Texas.
