商品簡介
This original, intellectually ambitious, beautifully written meditation on 20th-century German history is viewed through the prism of one family's story. The story begins after World War I with Andreas Wackwitz, the author's grandfather and a pastor whose early career was spent serving German parishes near the Polish-Silesian town of Auschwitz. Readers are taken on a journey that follows Andreas from Poland to what had been German Southwest Africa and back to Germany. Three historical periods play off each other: the years of the grandfather's active manhood, up through World War II; his bitter and disappointed old age, spent writing his memoirs while being confronted by a baffled and rebellious grandson; and the present time, which finds the author reflecting on his family's and his country's past, and on his own troubled relationship with that history as a young activist in postwar Germany.
