Equality and Diversity in Policing

This text provides accessible and fully up to date coverage of equality and diversity for students undertaking degrees and foundation degrees in policing and related subjects. The book starts by contextualising equality and diversity within the legislative and policy framework. It then examines the recent historical context by outlining some of the difficulties and criticisms that the police have faced in dealing with matters of equality and diversity. It considers diversity in terms of how the police relate to the general public but also how diversity issues impact on police careers and occupational culture. The main part of the book is clearly structured around the six strands of diversity.

Brian Stout is Associate Head of the School of Applied Social Sciences at De Montfort University. He was formerly a probation officer in Northern Ireland and has extensive experience of teaching equality and diversity to probation, police and other undergraduate students on applied programmes in both the United Kingdom and South Africa.
