Noting recent shifts in the translation profession, Luo Xuanmin (foreign languages, translation and interdisciplinary studies, Tsinghua U., Beijing) and He Yuanjian (translation, Chinese U. of Hong Kong) introduce a dozen essays that address challenges in bridging cross-cultural cognitive coding in translating between English and Chinese texts. From historical and contemporary perspectives, contributors examine topics including the role of translation in cultural identity, modernity, and the dissemination of Buddhism and Christianity in China; translation in the kunqu genre (an opera form of play); the translation work of Liang Qichao who argued for opening of China to the West; and a cooperative model for translating classical Chinese poetry. 作者簡介
Luo Xuanmin is Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, and Director of the Center for Translation and Interdisciplinary Studies, Tsinghua University, Beijing. His publications include books, translations and articles in various presses and journals at home and abroad. He is the founding editor of the journal Foreign Languages and Translation, chief editor of Abstracts of Chinese Translation Studies, and is on the advisory/ editorial board for several journals. He was twice Visiting Fellow at Yale's Comparative Literature Department (1995-1995, 2001) and Fulbright Research Scholar at UCLA (2006-2007). He is now Vice President of the Chinese Association of Comparative Studies in English and Chinese (CACSSEC), and Deputy Secretary-General of the Translation Association of China (TAC).

He is author and co-author of three books on Chinese generative grammar (1996, 2001, 2002) and author and co-author of more than 40 research papers published on translation studies, language typology, and Chinese linguistics
