Recording the results of excavations carried out from 1985-1999, the articles of this beautifully illustrated 2-volume work present thorough, thoughtful analysis of the buildings, commercial activity, religious mores, and daily life of this large archaeological site (now the site of the City of London Art Gallery) from the 10th through the 19th centuries. Notable are the articles addressing the Jewish community and its buildings from c.1150 until the expulsion of the Jews in 1290. Other topics include detailed examination of the Guildhall and its precinct and their role as the center of the local government of the City of London from the 12th through the 20th centuries, close analysis of the building sequences of the Guidhall and other buildings, analysis of the graves of two parish churches, and discussion of the craft trades carried out in the area.
