An Appalachian New Deal: West Virginia in the Great Depression

Thomas (history, emeritus, Shepherd University) offers a narrative synthesis on economic, political, and social issues in West Virginia during the Depression era, for students and general readers. The book focuses on the struggle between conservative Democrats and federal Democrats, with analysis of the consequences of specific legislation. There is also material about the impact of federal and state policies on ordinary people: mine workers, farmers, women, families, and minority groups. The author concludes that although the New Deal failed to foster a complete recovery in the state, it made conditions more tolerable. The bibliography lists a wealth of primary sources, such as personal papers of political and social figures, published and unpublished federal and state records, documents from private agencies, and journal articles. About 170 secondary sources are also listed. B&w historical photos are included. The book was first published in 1998 by University Press of Kentucky.
