Multiple Moralities and Religions in Post-Soviet Russia

Zigon (anthropology, U. of Amsterdam) and 11 contributors offer a variety of perspectives on the "social and political upheaval" and the critical questioning of the long-held moral and ethical mindsets that dominated during the Soviet era. Complicating matters for Russians trying to understand their history and rebuild traditions, business, social and individual health to name a few goals, was the plethora of religious influences, from the dominant Russian Orthodox Church to Protestantism, Islam, and more. The contributors address the issues surrounding religion as a source of morality in today's Russia, and related topics in the region's social, political, and cultural transition. Jarrett Zigon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of Morality: An Anthropological Perspective (2008), Making the New Post-Soviet Person: Moral Experience in Contemporary Moscow (2010), and HIV is God's Blessing: Rehabilitating Morality in Neoliberal Russia (2011).
