Incorporating the work of Michel Foucault and Louis Althusser on truth, power, the state, and subjectivity and Hayden White and Frank Kermode on narrative performance, Moon (sociology of human rights, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK) applies discourse analysis to the proceedings of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Committee. Her argument describes how the TRC constructed a narrative of the past as conditioned by violence by the state and those in opposition to the state, a confessional narrative of the present that would reveal truth and lay the foundations for reconciliation and national unity, and religious and therapeutic narratives of the future state of reconciliation. Overall, this tripartite narrative offered reconciliation as closure for the TRC process and had the material effect of closing of the possibility of a retributive response to past atrocities.
