Artists and Intellectuals and the Requests of Power

Gunther (classics, University of Freiburg) and De Gennaro (philosophy, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano) offer a multidisciplinary collection of papers examining freedom of art and thought under ancient and modern-day totalitarian regimes. Subjects range from the status of poets in the early Roman Empire to the more recent political views of Heidegger and Sartre. Special attention is paid to Asian traditions, including an examination of philosophers in World War 2 era Japan and intellectuals in Maoist China. The 13 papers (six in English, six in German, and one in Italian) were originally presented in a workshop at the 2007 Academy of German-Italian Studies conference. H.-C. Gunther is Professor of Classics at the university of Freiburg. He has published on Ancient Philosophy, Greek and Latin Poetry, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. He is also the author of numerous verse translations from Latin, Italian, Modern Greek and Georgian. Ivo De Gennaro is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. He has published Logos - Heidegger liest Heraklit (Berlin, 2001) and (with G. Zaccaria) Dasein : Da-sein. Tradurre la parola del pensiero (Milano, 2007).
