Thirty-four international experts on marine affairs and the law of the sea contribute 30 chapters to one of two texts developed from an August 2008 conference held by the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, Norway, focusing on the legal and policy issues for seas and oceans that have emerged with increasing globalization. Coverage includes the World Ocean in the Anthropocene epoch, and taking responsibility for the human impact on the seas; the use of the regulatory framework and technology to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing; using technology and the law to fight illegal oil pollution from ships; bioprospecting for marine genetic resources; and the issue of defining the extent of the continental shelf and establishing its outer limits by many coastal states beyond 200 nautical miles.
