商品簡介

Essays from a workshop held at Amherst College in 2008 investigate the cultural categories through which our legal and political systems construct an image of the 'executable subject,' someone who deserves to die as opposed to someone whose life is worth saving. The discussion sheds light on the way our culture understands what makes life worth preserving and how it views concepts of punishment and retribution. The first section is devoted to the executable subject, with material on topics such as the medieval origins of the Supreme Court's prohibition on executing the insane. The second section of essays examines the rituals of state killing, such as last words and last meals. In the third group of essays, authors offer perspectives on selfhood and the purposes of capital punishment. One contributor argues that the Panetti Supreme Court decision allowing capital punishment actually erodes the rationale for the continued use of the death penalty in the US. Sarat teaches jurisprudence and political science at Amherst College. Shoemaker teaches law at the University of Connecticut. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
