Towards Knowledge Economics: Advanced Strategies for Development

From the World Bank Institute's Knowledge for Development (K4D) program (launched in 1999), this volume presents analytical work and research on the knowledge economy in client countries. Using case studies as illustration, the volume describes how countries at all levels of development can use a knowledge and innovation-based process. It details advanced development strategies that focus on policies to identify, enhance, and exploit intangible assets in education, innovation, information and communication technology, and the prerequisite economic and institutional regime. The pillars for knowledge economies are outlined (governance, regulation, finance, trade, innovation, the information and communication infrastructure, and education), as are elements of the benchmarking methodology, and successful examples in Finland, Ireland, and the Republic of Korea. Implementing change and policy agendas in China and India, Malaysia, Tunisia, and Chile, and other countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Latin America are also discussed.
