Edward Hopper

Quintessentially American yet universally compelling, the work of Edward Hopper (1882-1968) travelled to Europe during 2009-2010, courtesy of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, which houses the largest collection of Hopper's work, in collaboration with the Palazzo Reale, Milan, the Fondazione Roma Museo, Rome, and the Fondation de l'Hermitage, Lausanne. Produced in an oversize format to accommodate generous display of the work (the volume measures 11.25x12"), this catalogue presents full-page reproductions and smaller images of details and drawings in sections on self portraits, early work as an illustrator, printmaking work, drawings and their role in his painting process, Hopper's eroticism, and work emphasizing time, place, and memory. Six essays (translated from the Italian) offer new scholarship. A chronology, exhibition list, and bibliography complete the volume, which is distributed in the US by Rizzoli. Carter E. Foster, former Curator and co-chair of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of America Art. Carol Troyen has worked with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for 27 years and has organized many exhibitions, including a famous one on Edward Hopper in 2007. She has lectured at museums across the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Sasha Nicholas is a Whitney Museum curatorial assistant. Luigi Sampietro is Professor of American Literature at the Universita degli Studi di Milano. Goffredo Fofi is an Italian writer and journalist. Demetrio Paparoni is a curator and author of fine art books.
