An artist and an original thinker on visual culture, Victor Burgin (History of Consciousness [emer.], University of California, Santa Cruz) has produced a body of influential essays over the past four decades. Those collected in this volume are arranged chronologically into four sections, moving from Burgin's early debates within conceptual art to his present concern with everyday perception in the environment of global media. The book includes classic essays such as "Situational Aesthetics" and "Photographic Practice and Art Theory"; less widely known articles as "Work and Commentary"; and the unpublished essays "Shadows, Time, and Family Pictures" and "Monument and Melancholia."
