Critically examining news shows, crime drama, and reality T.V., writers expose patterns in the media's portrayal of crime, criminals, and victims. They find that crime, criminals, and victims are portrayed similarly in both fictional and news stories, and that all forms of crime drama tend to reinforce certain race, gender, and class stereotypes, and they find that the media plays a powerful role in constructing images of criminals and victims. Denise L. Bissler is an associate professor of sociology at Randolph-Macon College. Her work has been published in Teaching Sociology; Innovative Techniques for Teaching Sociological Concepts and Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology. Joan L. Conners is an associate professor of communication studies at Randolph-Macon College. Her work has been published in American Behavioral Scientist, PS: Political Science and Politics, and Harvard International Journal of Press and Politics.
