Global Society and Human Rights

Cotesta (sociology, U. degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy) seeks to reconstruct the processes of global unification, the shaping of a common sense of humanity, and how that can lead to a sense of inalienable human rights in different cultures. His fundamental claim is that global society can be the context for the actual assertion of human rights, that the global network of relations must be regulated legally, which entails inalienable rights for each individual regardless of place of birth, economic and cultural conditions, sexual orientation, political beliefs, or other variables. Among his topics are knowledge transmission and the universality of man in global society, the Other and the paradoxes of universalism, common values and a common identity in Europe, and the public sphere and political space.
