Teaching Stress Management ─ Activities for Children and Young Adults

Tummers (health and physical education, Eastern Connecticut State U.) provides teachers and other professionals with activities to equip students in grades preK-12 with stress management skills. She gives information on stress and its types, causes, protective factors, and physiological responses that is based on applied research and evidence from best practices in schools, then outlines low or no-cost activities aligned with the National Health Education Standards and rooted in positive psychology, optimism, social support, resiliency, right-brain engagement, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and the responsive classroom. They include activities for coping, stress reduction, and building management skills, and incorporate yoga, affirmations, breathing, meditation, humor, journaling, relaxation, music and art therapy, massage, team building, and other tools.
