The book's five chapters are not organized chronologically, but according to arenas where music and politics met. He considers the revival of dancing on Lakota reservations between 1900-1922, popular responses to Federal Indian policy and attempts to repress dance revivals; surveillance in Indian boarding-schools and music education; the tension between racially "safe" musical forms and "dangerously" native ones in places like schools; and the final chapter looks at five Native musicians and how they applied what they learned at the boarding-schools to more popular resistance to Federal policy.
