Such is the pace of the field that every 10 years or so, it is necessary to produce another overview of the techniques used to study obsidian and artificial glass. Anthropologists, archaeologists, and scientists from various analysis techniques who are known for their work with the materials were invited to present papers at a February 2008 conference in Delphi, Greece. The 15 studies here include some by scientists who were were not able to attend, but wrote a paper anyway. They discuss such aspects as secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiling for hydration dating, temperature corrections for hydration dating, new perspectives on obsidian procurement and exchange at Tiwanaku in Bolivia, a compositional study of glass vessels from Mtwapa in Kenya, the characterization and provenance of archaeological glass artifacts from mainland and Aegean Greece.
