Jerusalem As Narrative Space / Erzahlraum Jerusalem

From an interdisciplinary December 2007 conference in Florence, 24 papers, seven in German, explore Jerusalem as a space where stories are told, mostly regarding Christianity but also the other Abrahamic religions. They cover displacement, dissemination, and reenactment; site, memory, and authentication; mappings in texts and images; voids--between absence and presence; stones and buildings in Jerusalem; and pictorial and poetic spaces. The topics include Jewish and Christian symbolic imaging of Jerusalem in the fourth century, Jerusalem between narrative and iconic, the temple of Jerusalem and the Hebrew millennium in a 13th-century Jewish prayer book, Christian identifications of Muslim buildings in medieval Jerusalem, and night flight to Jerusalem as a narrative for a far-away holy place. Annette Hoffmann, Ph.D. (2009) in Art History, University of Heidelberg, is a scholarly collaborator at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, Max-Planck-Institut. Her main fields of research are medieval book illumination, processes of cultural exchange, text-image relationships and pictorial narrative.Gerhard Wolf is Director at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, Max-Planck-Institut, and Honorary Professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin. He has published extensively on the role of images in religious, political and artistic contexts. Major research topics include sacred topographies in an interreligious perspective; Mediterranean art histories from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern period and the history of globalisation.
