Scholars of religion, the Bible, and history from Europe and the Antipodes reflect on the problems and possibilities of studying and presenting Christian religion in Roman antiquity. Four of the essays are from a 2007 workshop, four from a 2005 workshop, and four invited for the volume; all but four are in German. The topics in English are reflection on the Galilean Jesus in the light of Martin Hegel's Jesus und das Judentum; trinitarian belief, binitarian monotheism, and the one God: reflections on the origin of Christian faith in affiliation to Larry Hurtado's christological approach, on the trail of hope beyond Jesus, and studying "fractionation" in earliest Christianity in Rome and Ephesus. Cilliers Breytenbach, Dr. theol. habil. (Munich 1986), is Professor for the Literature, Religion and History of Early Christianity at Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany) and honorary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). He is the author of several monographs, including Grace, Reconciliation, Concord: The Death of Christ in Graeco-Roman Metaphors (Brill, 2010). Jorg Frey, Dr. theol. (Tubingen 1996), habil. (Tubingen 1998), is Professor of New Testament with focus on Early Judaism and Hermeneutics at the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich (Switzerland). He has published extensively on the Johannine literature (Die johanneische Eschatologie, 3 vols., 1997-2000), on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament in the context of Early Judaism.Cilliers Breytenbach, Dr. theol. habil.
