Hauser (communication, UC Boulder) examines the ways that dissidents and freedom fighters articulate moral claims about human rights in terms of the local situations where they struggle. He focuses on political prisoners' or prisoners' of conscience use of what he calls "thick moral vernacular" rhetoric. By exploring how dissidents communicate highly situated experiences of oppression, Hauser seeks to show how they have more to teach us about responding to oppression than States or NGOs. The material is organized into two parts, the first of which lays out the theoretical foundation with which he interrogates several case studies in the second part. These case studies come from South African struggles against apartheid, internal resistance to the Soviet Union, IRA hunger strikes, and prisoner abuse in Abu Ghraib.
