Although the Victorian period in England is often seen as peaceful and traditional, the goal of this series is to show that the era was a time of great change. In this text accessible to undergraduates, Phegley (English, U. of Missouri-Kansas City) describes the courtship and marriage traditions among the upper, middle, and working classes of England during the 1830s through the 1910s. Drawing on primary sources such as conduct books and advice manuals, letters, novels, popular magazine articles, and memoirs, the book discusses 19th century changes in the laws of marriage, divorce, and married women's rights, and shows how class and social expectations influenced courtship, marriage, and alternatives to marriage during the Victorian period.
