The Global Economic Crisis and the Future of Migration—Issues and Prospects: What Will Migration Look Like in 2045?

As the global economy stands on a precipice, the focus of policy debates is shifting increasingly towards the shape and sustainability of recovery. However the pressing issue of migration and its governance has not yet been addressed, despite the fact that the recession has been driving changes in world labour markets and migration practices - changes that can seriously influence social peace, interstate relations and the impact of global economic recovery.



In this volume, Bimal Ghosh analyses the ramifications and dynamics of the crisis on labour markets and migration patterns, and contends that the urgent need for joint action could well open up new opportunities for closer interstate cooperation, and serve as a stepping stone towards the establishment of a common international framework for improving the governance of human mobility.

BIMAL GHOSH is Emeritus Professor at Colombia's Graduate School of Public Administration, and director of a global project in migration management: the New International Regime for Orderly Movements of People (NIROMP). For several years he worked as a senior consultant to the United Nations, and the International Organization for Migration in Geneva. He was visiting professor at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, Harvard Institute for International Development and the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, UK. Publications include Managing Migration: Time for a New International Regime? and Huddled Masses and Uncertain Shores: Insights into Irregular Migration as well as numerous journal articles and newspaper columns.
