Eileen Williams (who later took the name Joy Janaka Wiradjuri Williams in honor of her background) was raised in boarding houses and went on to have a life filled with anger, violence, and mental illness. But she also developed into an accomplished poet and a parent. Read, a professional historian (U. of Sydney), presents a fictionalized account based on his hours of interviews with Williams and others close to her, and on historical documents. Many chapters begin with an autobiographical poem by Williams.
