Gottlieb (education research, U. of Wisconsin, Madison) and Ernst-Slavit (education, Washington State U.) show teachers how to instruct kindergarten through second grade students in academic language related to math. They discuss the language of math and the role of academic language in the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice of the Common Core State Standards, a curricular framework for standards-based instruction and assessment, and the major math domains of the standards for these grades, with examples of academic language related to them. The three following chapters are case studies written by teachers on a unit on whole numbers and number sense in kindergarten, a first-grade unit on base-10 thinking for students who are all of Mexican descent, and a second-grade unit on whole-number operations and odd and even numbers.
