Building on the work begun for their special edition of American Asian Review in 2001, the editors and contributors offer 11 articles about the effects of religious organizations within the Confucian cultural zones, including such case studies as the Roman Catholic church in Hong Kong, the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, and the Buddhist persuasion also active in Taiwan. Taking a comparative approach, they also include two Muslim cases (Malaysia and Indonesia), the Filipino Roman Catholic church (as compared to that in Hong Kong), Christian churches in Korea as compared to the growth of Presbyterianism in Taiwan, and a unique study in contrasts between the Japanese Soka Gakkai and the Fulun Gong. From these articles it is clear that, given the appropriate circumstances, religious movements that have swept through Asia for some time have considerable political impact.
